TrueCrypt is a free opensource software system for establishing and maintaining an on-the-fly-encrypted volume (data storage device). On-the-fly encryption means that data are automatically encrypted or decrypted right before they are loaded or saved, without any user intervention. No data stored on an encrypted volume can be read (decrypted) without using the correct password/keyfile(s) or correct encryption keys. Entire file system is encrypted (e.g., file names, folder names, contents of every file, free space, meta data, etc).

TrueCrypt is the free open-source disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X, and LinuxMain Features: * Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk. * Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive. * Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication). * Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent. * Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password: 1) Hidden volume (steganography – more information may be found here). 2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data). * Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Truecrypt 5.0 è un'applicazione per creare dischi e partizioni cifrate nascondendo i dati in esse contenuti. Ideale, ad esempio, per cifrare e proteggere da sguardi indiscreti il contenuto delle chiavette USB, soggette più delle altre memorie a smarrimenti e per questo più "accessibili" da parte di estranei.TrueCrypt è un'applicazione che consente all'utente di creare dei volumi virtuali cifrati nei quali inserire file personali. Per chi ha a cuore la sicurezza dei propri dati e vuole tenerli lontani da occhi indiscreti e' disponibile per il download la nuova versione di truecrypt. Per chi non lo conosce ancora, è uno software semplice e sicuramente da provare. (NB il sito in questo momento è un po' sovraccarico)

Criptare file e cartelle in modo pratico

Esistono vari strumenti per proteggere dei file facendo ricorso alla crittografia: uno di questi è truecrypt, che permette di creare un volume virtuale, utilizzabile come una normale cartella, in cui mettere i dati sensibili. Il volume creato potrà essere montato solo da chi conosce la password impostata al momento della creazione. Anche truecrypt può essere usato in più modi, può anche essere corredato di un'interfaccia grafica (vedi forcefield) ed esistono svariate guide al riguardo. In questo articolo mi limiterò ad elencare i comandi per essere operativi il più velocemente possibile.

TrueCrypt è un software open source per utenti Windows e Linux che consente di creare e gestire in modo rapido e sicuro uno o più dischi virtuali crittografati limitando l'accesso alle informazioni solo agli utenti in possesso della password. Vediamo rapidamente come procedere per creare un disco virtuale: 1 - Scarichiamo TrueCrypt dalla pagina di download. Il software è in inglese ma una volta installato possiamo modificare la lingua copiando nella cartella di installazione il file xml per la localizzazione in lingua italiana disponibile qui.
