Boxee è un nuovo media center sviluppato a partire dal codice di XBMC, dal padre Boxee eredita la propensione a essere esteso attraverso plugin (scritti in python), di suo aggiunge invece una spiccata dimensione sociale: possiamo condividere i contenuti multimediali che più ci piacciono con la nostra cerchia di amici, raccomandargliene e ricevere consigli da loro.

MythTv è sicuramente una delle applicazioni multimediali più apprezzate ed utilizzate del panorama Gnu/Linux. Il software è in uno stadio di sviluppo avanzato e, oltre alle innumerevoli funzioni di base, offre un buon numero di plugin capaci di estenderne ulteriormente il raggio d'azione. Grazie a questi moduli aggiuntivi MythTV può diventare: un gestore di photo gallery online, un player musicale, un feed reader e tanto altro ancora. Col tempo, inoltre, sono nate distribuzioni appositamente pensate per semplificarne l'installazione (Mythdora, KnoppMyth e la più famosa Mythbuntu). Ora però MythTV ha un nuovo rivale, Boxee, un media center Open Source, basato su XBMC (Xbox Media Center).

XBMC is the best open source (GPL), free entertainment hub you can find on internet. XBMC is really easy to install (for Linux users, especially in Ubuntu) and its features are very intuitive and simple to configure. Moreover the graphics themes are very attractive and it is able to manage many multimedia formats, "playlists, audio visualizations, slideshow and weather forecast functions". It is also possible to add many interesting third-party plugins that you can find through a simple google query (XBMC plugin). Last, but not least, XBMC is a multiplatform software, in fact the download page contains four different versions for Windows, XBox, Linux and MAC OSX. When we compared XBMC to the Windows Media Center we did not notice any loss in this open-source media center and, honestly, we were positively impressed by all the XBMC featured we tested.
