Beep Media Player (spesso abbreviato con BMP) è un audio player Open Source nato come fork di xmms ma attualmente completamente riscritto partendo da zero. Dal punto di vista tecnico BMP mantiene tutte le funzionalità di xmms ma ne fa un porting a GTK+ 2 garantendo quindi una migliore fusione ed integrazione all'interno dell'ambiente desktop Gnome. Il supporto ai formati audio è lo stesso offerto da XMMS il suo progenitore. BMP è un audio player libero, basato sul player multimediale XMMS. Il BMP è principalmente un port di XMMS alle GTK+2 (in particolare usa il wrapper gtkmm) e come tale è integrato meglio nell'aspetto grafico dell'ambiente desktopGNOME. Come XMMS, BMP assomiglia a Winamp e supporta anche le sue skin, oltre quelle create per XMMS. BMP supporta i più importanti formati audio, supportati da XMMS, poiché la differenza principale tra i plugin di input utilizzati in emtrambi i player è il grafico widget toolkit usato per 'About' e la configurazione del box di dialogo. In ogni modo, BMP non può utilizzare direttamente tutti i plugin di XMMS.

Banshee è sicuramente uno dei player audio open source più interessanti. Poco più di una settimana fa è stata rilasciata l’ultima versione del programma, la 1.5. Si tratta di una beta, ma introduce molte funzioni interessanti.

aTunes è un audio player musicale non molto famoso ma sicuramente da provare. Per chi non lo conoscesse, questo programma permette di ascoltare e creare collezioni musicali dei propri file presenti sul disco rigido. Il nome ricorda ovviamente qualcosa di più famoso, ovvero il programma iTunes della Apple.

XBMC is the best open source (GPL), free entertainment hub you can find on internet. XBMC is really easy to install (for Linux users, especially in Ubuntu) and its features are very intuitive and simple to configure. Moreover the graphics themes are very attractive and it is able to manage many multimedia formats, "playlists, audio visualizations, slideshow and weather forecast functions". It is also possible to add many interesting third-party plugins that you can find through a simple google query (XBMC plugin). Last, but not least, XBMC is a multiplatform software, in fact the download page contains four different versions for Windows, XBox, Linux and MAC OSX. When we compared XBMC to the Windows Media Center we did not notice any loss in this open-source media center and, honestly, we were positively impressed by all the XBMC featured we tested. Recommended!
