This week we have tested VirtualBox: a multiplatform virtual machine for x86 machines which allows you to test an OS from a simple .iso image. VirtualBox is easy to install and, just following the instructions contained in its interactive menus, you can setup your virtual OS in few minutes. We strongly recommend to be careful when you decide the quantity of RAM for your virtual OS. It is better to well balance it with the total RAM of your PC. When configuring the virtual HD for your OS it is better to select the "Dynamically Expanding Image" option. By doing this, your virtual OS will use all the hard disk it needs when in use. Last but not least, VirtualBox has a specific virtual USB controller which allows you to connect any USB devices to your virtual machines without installing specific drivers. Strongly recommended for all that people who like to test new OS without formatting their HD each time!

La versione opensource di VirtualBox, Open Source Edition (OSE) Source code, può essere installata sia partendo dal tarball, rilasciato con lo stesso numero di release di quella distribuita (VirtualBox-1.5.6-2_OSE.tar.bz2), che partendo dall’albero di sviluppo svn (Subversion command line client tool). I motivi per compilare la versione SVN possono essere diversi, partendo dalla scelta di provare nuove funzionalità introdotte per arrivare alla correzione dei bugs delle versioni rilasciate pacchettizzate, rinunciando però a funzionalità peculiari della versiona PUEL (esempio: USB). Sul sito di VirtualBox è abbastanza chiara la procedura per la compilazione e questa non vuole essere una guida, ma una cronistoria di quanto fatto (e provato) negli ultimi giorni da me.

Il mercato non ha mai subito forti accelerazioni e comunque i successi sono stati pochi e limitati. Il campo dei WebOS sembra più adatto al mondo della ricerca e degli smanettoni per per un uso davvero concreto. Sta di fatto che molti progetti sono stati lanciati, molte idee sono al vaglio di società e sviluppatori. Cloudo semplicemente è il prodotto più recente. Ancora in fase beta privata, si propone come uno dei maggiori WebOS sul panorama mondiale, in grado di favorire cooperazione e condivisione, capace di adattarsi ai più svariati device e browser. Sfrutta le potenzialità di XML e XSLT per l’immagazzinamento e la manipolazione/trasformazione dei dati e ha già attirato a sè le mire di molti developers in giro per la rete. Intanto, siamo qui ad aspettare. Certo è un fatto: la tendenza sempre più forte di portare sul web le applicazioni, spostare il loro dominio d’uso. E allora sorge spontanea una domanda: sicuro che non si può fare pure con i sistemi operativi?
