L'elenco di software che sfruttano la tecnologia VOIP è lunghissimo per cui, mi perdonerà il navigatore di google grazie al quale sto scrivendo questo articolo, oggi mi limiterò (molto faziosamente direbbe qualcuno) ad elencare soltanto i software rilasciati con licenze approvate dall'OSI e che utilizzano protocolli aperti. I motivi di questa mia scelta spero vi saranno più chiari nei futuri articoli che intendo scrivere, intanto, viste le strettissime specifiche che mi sono imposto posso dirvi fin d'ora che l'elenco dei software alternativi a Skype che tratterò in questo pezzo non sarà affatto lungo. Concedetemi quindi una piccola introduzione in merito ai protocolli utilizzati dai software VOIP, potrebbe essere noiosa ma forse sarà anche utile a qualcuno.

Per chi non lo conoscesse già Fring è uno dei migliori software per cellulari attualmente in circolazione, nato su Symbian, è ora disponibile su molti device, tra cui, da ieri, il nostro amato Android. Sebbene il sistema operativo di Google disponesse già di alcune applicazioni simili come eBuddy, SkypeLite e lo stesso client GTalk di Mountain View mancava una soluzione che integrasse un po' tutto insieme in una maniera intuitiva e semplice. La versione per Android è ancora abbastanza prematura, non riuscendo ancora ad importare i contatti sul Droid e non permettendo di fare telefonate tramite SkypeOut o via SIP ma le funzionalità base ci sono tutti quindi chat multi protocollo, telefonate SkypeToSkype o usando un protocollo nativo. Insomma una gran buona notizia. Un altra cosa interessante riguarda la disponibilità del programma, oltre ad essere presente sul market è anche scaricabile direttamente dal sito di Fring (andando su m.fring.com dal mobile), questo non puo' che essere apprezzabile permettendo l'uso dell'applicazione anche sui device non ufficiali (e quindi senza l'applicazione Market) o direttamente sull'emulatore. Stiamo provando il software già da un po' e a breve speriamo di recensirlo in maniera completa, nel frattempo vi lascio al video di uno degli sviluppatori del programma che, in maniera abbastanza bizzarra, cerca di spiegare il vantaggio di avere Fring anche sui vostro GPhones...

Finalmente Skype per Linux diventa (in parte) opensource. Sarà presto possibile sviluppare plugins ed embedded applications di terze parti per qualunque hardware specifico
