Apache Derby è un RDBMS (sistema di gestione di database relazionale) scritto completamente in Java e rilasciato sotto "Apache License, Version 2.0", quindi open source e completamente gratuito. L'attuale versione (10.6.1.0) supporta quasi tutte le caratteristiche "obbligatorie" richeste da SQL-99/SQL-2003 ed alcune di quelle opzionali.

Il comando mysql permette di generare in modo nativo l’output di una query in formato html. Per farlo è sufficiente sfruttare l’opzione -html.

Progetto giovane e ambizioso, progetto che denota una certa voglia di primato da parte del team di sviluppo che ha lanciato il guanto di sfida a phpMyAdmin e ha ricevuto già parecchi riscontri positivi. E’ completo, costruito utilizzando le ultime tecnologie web tale da rendere l’interfaccia potente e accattivante, è open source. Assolutamente da provare.

Negli ultimi tempi, prima di iniziare a scrivere il codice sql necessario alla creazione di tabelle e indici, ho imparato a modellare le entità attraverso MySQL Workbench, lo strumento di design di MySQL. MySQL Workbench nasce dalle ceneri del bellissimo e potente DbDesigner 4 della fabFORCE, disponibile in ambiente Windows e sviluppato con librerie Qt. Le prime versioni di MySQL Workbench erano praticamente inusabili: crash continui e improvvisi impedivano di utilizzarlo in modo produttivo. La versione che ho installato qualche mese fa (cioè la 5.1.17) è invece sorprendentemente stabile e ben realizzata.
